NZ Nationals/Oceanias

Just finished day one of the NZ/Oceania sprint Kayak champs in Rotorua. First hit out over 1000m since London 2012.
Ken Wallace of AUS came over to exact some revenge from the days when I knocked him off the top step of the Aussie regattas. Ken has a strong pedigree and has a couple of World titles and an Olympic Gold and Bronze medal to his name. He took out the K1 1000 today in 3.32.9 seconds and I was second in 3.36.4
It was a shame to see the main Kiwi rival Darryl Fitzgerald injured in the heats today and not able to race the final. On a positive note it was good to see Jasper Batts and Zac Quickenden step up their paddling to be second and third Kiwis. Also my training partners Zac Franich and Marty McDowell put down some good performances as well. Tomorrow we have the K1 500s and K2 1000 final.
Below is the final podium
With Ken Wallace on the top step and the other up and coming Aussie surf ski sensation Lachlan Tame who was third overall. 20130215-184825.jpg
